In South West England, the Fourfables restaurant combines modern techniques with traditional European cuisine to create a unique and ever-changing seasonal menu. Unsurprisingly, this comes at a hefty premium and this was a key factor to consider when creating the logo.

The idea

Immediately, my brain went ‘there’s two F’s there, do something with those’ but that’s be done a shed load of times so I was pumped to explore ways of combining the number four with an F letterform instead. After many failed efforts, I found promise in the idea of merging a script-like F with the number 4 hidden neatly in plain sight. Ensuring the design felt premium enough, I toyed with the thins and thicks of the letterform to make it feel almost calligraphic and rooted in heritage. I added an oval to surround the lettermark which gave the design the body and balance it needed and made it feel like a seal of approval for high quality produce and technique.

Finalising

When deciding on a typeface to pair with the mark, I needed to make sure it reflected the same core values whilst having enough contrast when sat next to each other. I opted for a (what I like to call) subtle-serif typeface where it has characteristics of both a sans serif and serif which makes it feel modern and approachable yet elegant.

In an effort to nod to the fresh ingredients used at the restaurant, I decided to bring in earthy tones which when paired with a muted gold further complimented the rest of the high-end aesthetic.
